FLYSHEET

The purpose of the flysheet is to protect the tent from water.It is waterproof on the outside and also having a surface on the inside to collect any condensation.The condensation then runs down the walls to the ground.It is very important when using a flysheet to ensure that there is no contact with it and the inner of the tent.This insures that the inner of the tent will remain dry.

INNER TENT

The inner tent is the main body of the tent.With double-skin tents the inner tent is not waterproof as a flysheet is used.With single-skin tents the material used is waterproof and breathable.This protects from water on the outside and allows water vapour to be pushed out.

THE VESTIBLE

This is a floorless covered part outside the tent used for storing boots,rucksacks and other camping equipment.They are also used for tasks that are best not done inside the tent such as cleaning equipment or cooking.

THE GROUNDSHEET

The groundsheet is used on the inside of the tent providing a water-proof barrier between the ground and the sleeping bag.With double skin tents the groundsheet is already sewn in.With single skin tents the groundsheet can be already sewn in or come separately.The advantages of having a separate groundsheet are it allows loadsharing when backpacking and its easier to erect the tent.The main disadvantage is that a separate groundsheet provides less protection against insects.

THE POLES

These provide the structural support for the tent.For easier transportation and storage its advisable to have collapsible poles.Some tents use rigid poles made of metal or wood.Some tents use semi-rigid poles made of fibre glass or soft metal alloys.

TENT PEGS

Tent pegs are used to fix the tent to the ground.They are made of wood,metal or plastic.Pegs are used to secure the bottom edge of the fabric to the ground or are used with guy ropes which help secure and shape the tent.

AIR VENTS

Used to reduce the problem of condensation.When its colder on the outside of the tent than on the inside,condensation is formed from breathing vapours.This condensation will dampen all clothes and sleeping bags.

GROUNDSHEET PROTECTOR

This is a separate sheet placed under the main grounsheet to help protect it.Perfect for use on rough terrain and a lot cheaper to replace than a main groundsheet.
